WHERE DID THAT COME FROM?

As a writer, I get this question a lot. I don't mind because it means the person asking is genuinely curious. Then there are moments where the question sparks something interesting.

I generally store plot points, scenes, and ideas in my head (sometimes on the laptop). I don't always know what story or character they fit with and sometimes they don't fit any, but they're in there. I was talking with my chiropractor today (I tweaked my back earlier this week and needed an adjustment) and the the notion of where ideas come from came up. I mentioned that the third Tom Myers Mystery will open with a scene based on a real event that happened not far from where I live. That scene is the catalyst that kicks off the story.

I also mentioned a plot that's been percolating for about five years now based on some news reports I heard about seemingly unrelated murders, but not so out there to see how they could be. I tucked the idea away. Not sure when or where, or if, I would use it.

On the drive home, my brain kept replaying that particular plot until I realized that is wasn't it's own separate plot, but part of a plot for a novel I'm just starting to put together. Once I realized the connection, the story exploded.

And this is why I love my job.

This is the magic of writing.

The PulpFest Organizing Committee is pleased to announce that eleven individuals and one organization have been nominated by their peers for the 2021 Munsey Award. This annual award is named after Frank A. Munsey — the man who published the first pulp magazine. It recognizes an individual or organization that has bettered the pulp community, be it through disseminating knowledge about the pulps or through publishing or other efforts to preserve and foster interest in the pulp magazines we all love and enjoy. Congratulations to all of the nominees for this prestigious award presented annually at PulpFest.

The nominees listed below — who received multiple nominations — will be forwarded to a committee made up of all the living Lamont, Munsey, and Rusty Award winners who will select the recipient of this year’s Munsey Award.

The recipient of the 2021 Munsey Award will be announced on Friday, August 20, as part of our evening programming, open to all members of PulpFest 2021 as well as the general public. The award will be presented by William Lampkin, the winner of our 2018 Munsey Award.

CHARACTERS WHO KICK ASS... EMOTIONALLY.

The Ruby Files' own Bobby Nash joined authors Jen Mulvihill, Bill Craig, Selah Janel, Nikki Nelson-Hicks, Mark Bousquet, and Gordon Dymowski on The Ruby Files' own Sean Taylor's Bad Girls, Good Guys, and Two-Fisted Action blog to discuss Characters Who Kick Ass... Emotionally. Check out the author's roundtable discussion HERE.

Main characters who are intense and aggressive and filled with vim and vigor, who punch first and may not ask questions at all, who get in in the villain's face and shake an angry fist while escaping the 13th death trap today, who climb mountains and ride dragons and drive swords through demonspawn... well, those heroes... we know all about what makes them tick and how to put all that energy and action on to the page. (If not, check out the bulk of the tutorials and roundtables on the blog.) But what about those times when that energy and action needs to be less, well... actiony... and a lot more subtle. What about those heroes who are heroes of the heart and warriors of words? How do you do that exactly as a writer? Find out HERE.

Thanks again, Sean. This was a great topic of discussion.
